What is sex therapy? And do you specialize in relationship and couples therapy, too? How long will I be in therapy?

Each member of our team holds various couples and sex therapy credentials: systemic sex therapy training, AASECT professional membership, certified sexologist, and more. Many people choose to work with a sex & relationship therapist, given that they want someone who is comfortable discussing their sexuality and/or conflict resolution in their relationship.

Sex therapists are trained to provide in-depth talk therapy, and have advanced training in treating sexual issues and concerns. Some frequent issues that couples come to talk about are: differences in desire, boredom in the bedroom, recovery after an affair, porn/sex addiction & support for partners, gender identity issues, erectile dysfunction, delayed/premature ejaculation, painful sex, and communication issues around intimacy.

The length of time in therapy varies based on the individual or couple.  Currently, over 80% of my clients find that their treatment goals are met within eight to twelve sessions, while 20% of clients may have more intensive counseling when there are many areas of conflict.

Can I Pay with MY Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)?

Investing in our mental health is one of the most important decisions we can make for ourselves and our relationships.  If our Primary Therapist fees are too high, we welcome you to reach out to work with one of the Sex & Relationship Interns on site whom offer pro & bono and sliding scale sessions based on financial need. Our Client Care Coordinator conducts phone consultations sessions to make sure that the Masters-Level Candidates can best provide you services, and otherwise will refer you to the best fit professional.

And yes, you can pay with either your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and/or Health Savings Account (HSA) - meaning that you can deduct the cost of counseling.

I don't know where to begin. My partner and I are currently in couples therapy but we haven't made progress in our treatment goals, Our therapist doesn’t want to talk about sex. Can you help?

Please feel free to reach out with with questions to schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation: welcome@sunpointwellness.com. We frequently collaborate with other couples therapists, individual therapists, and other counseling clinicians. We’re happy to suggest resources or talk with your therapist, as well as provide goal-specific additional couples counseling. For example, some couples may come to us for a handful of sessions to address sexual or couples-specific suggestions that their therapist may not have the advanced training to provide successful treatment.

Do you collaborate with other professionals? Like my lawyer? My individual therapist? My pelvic floor therapist? My psychiatrist? Etc?

Yes - to all the above! We wholeheartedly believe that every person should have the right to pick the best therapeutic team - and we’re happy you're considering working with our practice. We can provide referrals to clinicians, should you want a first (or second opinion). We designate one day/week to check-in with our clients provider teams - and can provide Continuity of Care Reports (with a release of information) to any providers who you want us to release information.

I'm nervous to start. What can I expect in a session?

Many people are nervous to open up at the beginning of therapy, especially given the sensitive nature of some of the experience you'll share. Therapy typically starts with discussing your goals, and we can work at whatever pace is comfortable for you (or you and your partner). The first few sessions with be the therapist gathering more information to get to know you, your family, and your relationship before beginning working on your goals.
