5 Things you wish you knew about paraphilias and other sexual “deviations”

Paraphilias are all-too-often "taboo", poorly understood, and stigmatized topics even among mental health professionals with varying degrees of exposure and training for working with participants who present with paraphilia-related issues and/or concerns. The present presentation will aim to cultivate a greater depth of knowledge, awareness, and understanding of paraphilias as well as an understanding of essential tools for effective assessment and diagnosis, development of rapport/working alliance, and evaluation of ethical issues.

Learning objectives

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Diagnose a paraphilic disorder according to the DSM-5.

  2. Identify multiple possible factors which could co-occur with paraphilic behavior including psychological, cultural, and other influences.

  3. Assess/differentiate between specific paraphilias and fetishes.

  4. Identify approaches to treatment of paraphilias.
